MISSION

SHOOTER is GBF's tactical assessment. Candidates complete a series of assessed evolutions across two days and one night: live fire, physical performance, decision making and the unknown.

You will know what capabilities are being tested. You will not know the tests.

Testing may include:

  • Rifle and pistol shooting

  • Movement under load

  • Individual physical assessment

  • Team tasks

  • Navigation and night movement

  • Casualty scenarios

  • Weapon stripping and assembly

  • Problem solving and decision making

  • Endurance, strength and work-capacity challenges

  • Water or environmental obstacles where terrain permits

Evolutions, distances and sequence change from one SHOOTER to the next. Arrive prepared to perform across all of them.

SCORING AND AWARDS

SHOOTER finds the candidate who holds a standard across shooting, fitness, judgment and teamwork while fatigue and uncertainty build.

Candidates are observed across shooting, physical performance, decision making and teamwork. Some evolutions are scored individually. Others are team tasks.

Accuracy, speed and fitness count. So do judgment, communication, composure, safe weapon handling and the ability to keep performing as fatigue accumulates.

No overall standings are given during the event. Final results are announced at the finish.

Awards: First, second and third place on the Male and Female podiums.

EXECUTION

Arrival: From 1700, Friday, December 10, at The SawMill Training Complex.

Brief: 0500, Saturday, December 11. Mandatory. No late starts.

Start and finish: The SawMill Training Complex.

Finish: About 1700, Sunday, December 12.

Format: Individual and team evolutions throughout. The sequence, distances, timings and requirements are not released in advance.

Night: Candidates stay on location Saturday night. Assessed activity continues after dark and may run through normal sleeping hours.

Load: A 25 lbs dry ruck may be required during assessed evolutions. Water, food, firearms and ammunition do not count toward the weight.

Terrain: Roads, trails, woodland, ranges, structures, water and other areas at the venue.

Recovery: Time to eat, hydrate, maintain equipment and rest comes between some evolutions. Do not count on long or predictable recovery periods.

SITUATION

SHOOTER tests whether you keep performing when shooting is only one part of the problem. You will shoot, move, and work alone and as part of a team. You will be assessed fresh and fatigued, in daylight and darkness, under conditions designed to make simple tasks harder.

PREPARE

Arrive with a ruck that weighs 25 lbs dry, and train with it. Prepare covers what counts toward ruck weight and ways to make it.

EQUIPMENT

Kit list: The SHOOTER Kit List (PDF) covers firearms, ammunition, load and the standard GBF kit. You provide and maintain your own firearms, ammunition and personal equipment. Joining instructions may add event-specific items.

Firearms: A rifle and a pistol. Typical calibers are 5.56 / 7.62 rifle and 9mm pistol. If you are unsure whether a firearm is suitable, contact GBF before the event.

Ammunition: Plan for about 350–400 rifle rounds and 250–300 pistol rounds. No green-tip ammunition. Joining instructions confirm the final requirement.

Load: 25 lbs dry. Water, food, firearms and ammunition do not count toward it. No weighted vests or sandbags.

Water: Available at The SawMill. Hydration bladders strongly recommended.

Rations: You are responsible for your own food and nutrition throughout the event.

Medical: Personal first-aid kit required. Tell GBF staff about any medical condition before the start. Staff may withdraw any candidate they consider medically unfit to continue.

Dress: Your choice. Dress for movement through rural terrain and vegetation, changing weather and long hours outdoors. Your equipment will get wet, dirty and knocked around.

SAFETY AND RULES

Weapons safety: Safe firearm handling is mandatory at all times. Follow range staff and GBF instructions immediately. Unsafe handling may lead to removal from an evolution or the event.

Conditions: Prepare for cold, wet and changing conditions and long periods outdoors in daylight and darkness.

Water: Where an evolution uses water, you are responsible for protecting your firearms, electronics and equipment.

Fatigue: Physical fatigue and disrupted sleep are deliberate parts of SHOOTER. Safe weapon handling and sound decisions remain your responsibility throughout.

  • Ruck weight stays at 25 lbs dry whenever it is specified.

  • Follow all firearm and range-safety instructions.

  • Use approved firearms and ammunition only.

  • Teamwork is permitted and expected when GBF staff direct it.

  • Stay within designated event areas and follow staff instructions.

  • The format, sequence and content of SHOOTER are not published in advance.

  • GBF may modify, replace or remove evolutions for safety, weather, venue restrictions or operational requirements.

ADMIN

Cancellations: GBF voucher only. Request it 60 or more days before the event. Vouchers are valid for one year.
